Knowledge of Kannada in the workplace is not a must unless you have to interact with Kannada speaking staff on a daily basis. Also, stepping out of your office into the hustle and bustle of Bengaluru life can be irritating sometimes, particularly if you need to express your self more clearly to the locals, be it at the market, or when hiring a taxi or auto. Shopping at the malls may be easier, but when you need to go to the local temple or church and need to buy some flowers, candles, coconuts, betel leaves, etc, it is advantageous to speak in the native tongue so as to spend less time in communication. Speak in a language other than Kannada and you will end up having miscommunication with your drivers, security men you hired or the local vendor. Also, your domestic help can be troublesome and not show up in time if you are not able to communicate in Kannada. No doubt, some of them will understand English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, but it will be an added advantage for you to speak the local language to communicate better, get your work done faster saving your time and energy.
